RUGBY FOOTBALL
A AYestport correspondent says the disastrous deteat- •of the Duller representative team against a weak West Coast combination at- Hokitika will require some explanation. The local team was beaten by what might be termed a cricket score.- It must be admitted that Duller were picked to win comtortably on Saturday, considering that Fong, Seandrett and other prominent players were absent from the West Coast team. Holder was absent- from the Butler team, also Gilsennan, hut these defections would not to- any great- extent account for the trouncing they received from the Seadon- Shield holders.
Jf tlie Buffer Rugby Union lmd taken the team through on the Friday instead of the day on which the matcii was played, the players would have had a clmnc-e of contesting the game in n fit condition. The journey to Hokitika from Westport is a long and tiring one, and it is bard to expect a team to play up ‘ to its usual form after a car journey of some six hours. .
