THE FIRST MAKQ SEEN. RUSSELL, 'September 22. While !.V!.r -H. -Stonex, . of-. Russell, was ihapuku,fishing .with Mr H. Yipond on ‘‘his launch Ozone,' the firsfc mako shark of the season was sighted. The ■launch whs close in to Piercy Island 1 ,! near the “hole in the rock,” and a 1 number of hapuku previously caught liung in the water from the I?,lurch's rill. As : ainother hapuku was being hauled in a huge .shark ;followed it; right up to the surface, -and -ytctirlly humped- tha rudder. ,It .h.ad taken fhe sinker from the line, and -being .so close could have easily been harpooned —-only there was no harpoon on-board. Steps were .taken immediately to ~pulß the other hapuku inboard -lest-the' mukqj atla.-ked them, as often ,-happens. ■ 7 Mr -Vipond- uvho has a long '..expert* *o-.ice of fishingin these waters, considers this the biggest mako he has seen, and thinks it -probable it is one that has 'been sighted during the last two summers by. the .-Cape Brelt right-housekeeper, 1 • School fish were present in great,, abundance —schnapper, travelli and nmuim.au—apd birds were also in evidence in .u-nusually? ilar'ge numbers.
