“NEWS OF WORLD” TOURNAMENT (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) LONDON, Sep. 20. Surprises in the ‘‘News of the World” golf turnament were the defeat of Perry by D. Reese, a 20-year-old Welshman, ancl the defeat of Vardon by Watts. Results were:— Padgham defeated Smith 5/4, Hodgson defeated Gadd at the I,9th, W. Davies defeated Frostick 6/4, E. Whitcombe defeated Gaudin one up. O. Whitcombe defeated Robson 6/4, Cotton defeated Nolan two up, Kenyon defeated Faulkner 2/1. Alliss defeated Walker 5/4, Reese defeated Perry at the 19th, R. Whitcombe defeated Jewell 3/2. Watts defeated Vardo u two up. Compston defeated Back 4/3.

Cotton is favourite tor the tournament, the first round of which was completed on the hill at the Purley Downs course, on the Surrey Hills. A big crowd followed, bis ding-dong figlit with the Irishman, Nolan, who di ( | so well in the early stages of the open championship. It was touch and go all the way. They were all square at the 13th. Nolan lost through his approaches overrunning the last two greens. The biggest surprise was the defeat of Perry who reached the final in 1932. Reese nearly threw .the match laway after being two up with three to play. Padgham, one of the strongest challeners did the first nine in 32 and gave , a delightful display of smooth controlled hitting.

C. A. Whitecombe began brilliantly, with three, four, two, and three, which was six under bogey. He took only 31 for the first nine, yet was only two up. He later won the four successive holes. THE HOKITIKA CLUB. A meda] .match will be played by the Hokitika. Golf Club on Saturday, when, in view of counter attractions, players will selecp their own opponents. On the following Saturday, September 30, a four ball bogey match will be played, and' nominations are required to be in the hands of the secretary net later than next- Wednesday. Those who .are not nominated will be drawn.
