The death is announced from Kawakawa, of Allred Edward Earner, aged 78 years, a former member 'of the armed constabulary and in later years, the police force, who was stationed at Eeefton about 1905. A boring plant has been sent to Cook South Westland, (to test a considerable area of the flat which lias been taken up under prospecting license, for gold-mining purposes. The areas are being tested by a Dunedin firm. At the Saltwater beach, Little Wanganui river, confirmatory prospecting of a sea beach claim is in hand, and it is expected that North Island investors will become interested in the venture, where a dredge is to be established.

Further improvement in the condition of Mr R. Hazel hurst was reported from the Christchurch Hospital yesterday morning. Mr Hazelhurst was admilled to the. hospital on Sunday night ■in an unconscious state, resulting from head injuries suffered in a motor accident at the intersection of Ferry Road and Fitzgerald Avenue. He was seriously ill, but rallied on Monday night, when he regained consciousness and since then has shown gradual ini - j provement. Miss Dulcic Cameron, who _ was injured at the same time as Mr Hazelhurst, lias not yet regained consciousness. Her condition remains 'critical.
