BRAVE CONSTABLE

CHASErfIE MOTOR-CAR, THIEF. EXTREME FORTITUDE SHOWN. (Per Preis Association — Qopynoht.) AUCKLAND, September 20. The condition at noon of Constable Stewart who was seriously injured when thrown from the running board of a stolen motor-car when endeavouring to arrest the driver, was reported to be satisfactory. He lias a compound fracture of the right leg. At the time of the chase he .was in mufti. Ho.boarded a taxi, and the latter soon overhauled the car and headed it to the kerb-side where it stopped, but, when the constable jumped on the runliingrboard it quickly backed out and sped off- The taxi followed, -doing 45 m.p.li.. Rut it could not keep pace. To those in the taxi it looked as if . the mad was doing all he could to throw the constable from the-car. It looked ! as if a fight was going on, and the car was swerving all over the road. When .nicked up' Constable Stewart bad been rolled thirty yards along the road, and was covered with blood. His Tig appeared mangled, and be was gasping -with pain, but lie was given a cigarette, and 1 when another constable arrived, he immediately called on him to take ilia statement. This' was done by the light of a torch, the injured man retaining remarkable control. Tbe stolen car was found this morn-', in'g only a quarter 6f a mile from'the scene of the crash, but the driver so; far has been untraced. Constable Stewart was still in a serl-i ous condition to-night, although there: was a slight improvement. Up to a late hour no arrest had been made.
