RELIGIOUS LIBERTY

VICTORIAN PRESBYTERIANS.

STORM OVER DR ANGUS CIASE

(Australian. Press Association).

MELBOURNE, September 20.

The Presbyterian General Assembly yesterday had a long and warm discussion on the Dr Angus case. The wide division of opinion became more apparent as the session proceeded and the acting-Moderator made repeated appeals for order. After a. stormy session it decided to remit Dr Angus case back to the New South Wales Presbytery. Motions and amendments succeeded one another rapidly, and fifty members, chieily from New South Wales, walked out amidst an uproar.

The Victorian moderator (the Rev. MacAulay), in an outsanding speech, finally brought about order again, and paved the way for an agreement. He made sen National disclosures concerning the evidence submitted against Dr Angus, which he declared was valueless in a court of law. Dr Angus liad been judged without a trial.

The Rev* Samuel Angus, M-A., Ph.D. D.Litt (Queen’s University of Belfast) D.D. (Glasgow), has been Professor of New Ttestament and Historical Theology in Theological Hall, St. Andrew’s College, Sydney University, since 1914. The issue in the case is: How far should liberty of thought be permitted to a teacher entrusted with the training of future ministers of the Presbyterian Church?
