MOTORISTS’ TAXES
£2,650,000 DURING PAST YEAR. CHRISTCHURCH, September 15. A total of £2,652,177 was paid by motorists of the Dominion for the year ended March 31, 1933, as taxation under legislation affecting mo'-or-ists) according to a letter from the North Island Motor Union read at a meeting of the executive committee of the Sou-h Island Motor Union last evening. Particulars o fthe taxation were as follows : £ Customs duties (vehicles and parts) 145,059 Tyre tax 64,177 '-Motor spirits, a/t 6cl (Highways) 1,245,614 Alotor spirits at 4d (Consolidated fund) 526,024 Surtax on pe.ro 1 (Consolidated fund) ... 96,094 Fees under Moto r Vehicles Act ... ... 352,5611 Heavy traffic fee s 165,000 Drivers’ licenses 55,000 Fees under Transport Act commeycial vehicles licenses) 2,618 Total ... ... £2,652,177 “If these figures are quoted at your annual meeting or disseminated among your members in any other way,” tlie letter said, “it will assist us in directing public opinion to the punishing nature of the class taxation now carried by tho motorist.” “It- is a collossa.l amount,” remarked Mr J.
