HUMPHREYS RACE
PROSPECTING PROPOSITI ON
The Alining Executive made arrangements during last week for the commencement of prospecting in the Hum-phreys-Blue Spur field to be served by the Humphreys race, if the results are encouraging .enough. During the week Supervisors Cooper and McQuilkin did exploratory work in viewing the Work, and on Friday last, Mr S. AV. Strong, mining engineer, visited the field accompanied by a Public AVorks officer, to confer with the .supervisors. On Saturday the equipment for two prospecting parties was sent out.
To-day prospecting began in the Kanieri Forks region, about a mile- in from the road. Supervisor McQuilkin is in charge, and has six men under him. On the Humphreys side, Supervisor Harris is in charge, ancl has four men available for prospecting. The parties will be increased in number next week, and a third centre for prospecting will be established in the Blue Spur location. There are 7,000 acres of country involved in the area the water race would command, and the three main parlies will cover an area of triangular shape, as a start in tho investigations.
An access track lias been opened from Kanieri Forks to Humphreys | which bisects the field, and gives good ingress to the upper portion of the field. Subsidiary tracks will be cut as required, avid a portion of the old Kanieri Lake water race below tho Forks will be cleared to provide water f’br washing prospects, as water is scarce in tho higher country, and is the one reason why the ground has not been worked earlier. The old race was built on generous proportions many years ago, and is said to Im in fair order, though the flmnings have gone. It will he serviceable now to assist with
the prospecting. Next week’ the Alining Executive hope to establish the third party, and increase the number in each party so that work may he carried on more qu.-fkly. The Unemployment Board lias approved of the vigourous steps being taken to prove the field.
