SAVINGS BANK
ITS WIDE USE IN ENGLAND LONDON, September 12.. When reviewing the work of his department Sir Kirgsly Wood, British Postmaster-General, said a welcome sign of the times was the position of V'e Rost Office Savings Bank. It had well over £300,000,000 standing to the credit of its 9,500,000 depositors, and to this must be added some £200,000,000 of Government securities held for Post Office deposits. One in every four of the population of Great Britain was making use of this bank, and, when on considering the question whether the conditions of the people were improving or not, it was interest, ing to note that there were LOGO,OOO more live accounts to-day than there were in 1912, and the aver ace balance standing to the credit of each depositor was 50 per cent more than it was 20 years ago. That was one of the best pieces of evidence not only of the strength of the country, but of the sagacity and common sense of the people.
