DAMAGE ABOARD GOLDEN ROD AUCKLAND, September 12. Safely berthed to-day, the American cargo .steamer Golden Rod bears unlnishaken icvidence of the tempestuous weather she encountered when .approaching the New Zealand coast. For lb hours, the freighter was hove to in a gale outside Cuvier Island. The Golden Rod, which was originally exacted to reach port at midday yesterday, encountered the storm at midday on Sunday. Steadily the wind increased until by nightfall it was blowing with the force of a full gale. At midnight on Sunday, the sliipj was hove-to. An exceptionally heavy sea wins running, and the. spray was frequently thrown high ever the 'bridge. About 4 o’clock yesterday morning, the sea carried .away a meathouse, situated amidships on the port side of the vessel. With the meathouse disappeared choppers, grinders, and a quantity of meat. A no", her sea w en bed a large ventilator from its socket, and smashed -part of the ship’s gangway, at the after end of the .vessel, the sea;, washed some of the deck cargo- of sawn timber out of position. Two of the crew suffered minor injuries. The gale moderated yesterday afternoon, and allowed the steamer to resume her voyage, port being reached early thjs morning.
