OPIUM RAID
CHINAMAN FINED £55 (Per Press Association—Copyright). WELLINGTON, September 13. Two Chinese were arrested early this morning, when the police raided piemises at 21 Haining Street. A large crowd of Chinese watched the efforts of the police to break into the house, which was strongly .barricaded. A quantity of apparatus alleged to have been used for the purpose of smoking opium was found. The arrested men appeared at the Court this morning to answer charges relating to the (alleged smoking of opium. Jack Ham was later lined £SO for permitting premises to be used f ; or the purpose of smoking opium, .and £5 for obstructing the police when they made the raid. .The only other person found on the. premises was a Chinese, who was convicted and fined £l2 10,s, for being there to smoke opium.
