Australia. Commodore Burgess Watson said that the ships of both squadrons had not previously had an opportunity for competitive exercises together. It had always been intended that such manoeuvres should he carried out when Rear-Admiral Goeffrey Blake wfoe stationed in New Zealand; but as only one ship was then available it had not been possible to carry out the .plan, “The recent manoeuvres in the gulf,” the Commodore added, “have been of tremendous help to both squadrons. The competitive spirit which prevailed, and the strategic exercises which were undertaken have been of very great value, and the exercises have done a world of good to all of us.”
