OBITUARY
MR W. Tv BON-D, OF NELSON. (Per Press Association, Copyright). NELSON, September 13. The death has occurred of Mr William Thornton Bond, in his 93rd year, a greatly respected resident of Nelson. He saw service in the sixties, and formerly, for many years, was one of proprietors of “The Colonist. Born at Lancaster, in England, when only a few weeks old, he was taken by his parents to the West Indies where his father had: a sugar plantation. Both parents died of the yellow fever when lie was ten years of age, and he returned to Lancaster.
He was educated at the Lancaster Grammar School, and served his apprenticeship with the “Lancaster Guardian.” In 1862 he came out to New Zealand on the ship Electra, landing at Nelson in the following year.
He took art active interest in all movements appertaining to the betterment of the people. He had been a member of the Foresters’ Lodge since 1871.
Mr Percy Bond, managing director of the “Hawera Star” is a son. His other son was the late Mr J. H. C. Bond, for many years Dominion Superintendent of the New Zealand Shipping Coy.
