FINAL RUSH
BUILDING SUBSIDY MANY APPLICATIONS RECEIVED. (Per Press A ssociation—- Copyright WELLINGTON, Septermer 12. ■ The rush in Wellington to take advantage of tne buitaing subsidy has been intense -during the past few clays. To-day there was the final luoji, there being 204 applicants. Hi us therei were more in one day than m tiie month previous to the intimation that the scheme was to close down. Te total estimated cost of the works covered by the applications was £50,1'65 3s lOd and the estimated labour cost. £17,164 11s,-and the estimated amount of subsidy £6,255 19s 4d.
The applicants were allowed to exercise their rights in every city, town and village up till 5 ,p.m, today, so that there is bound to be a stream of applicants received by the Unemployment Board for the next day or two. The work of going through these applications, classifying- them, •and securing the Board’s approval, or otherwise, may easily take over a week. The New Zealand totals are not yet available. Up till Friday last the total number of applications .received by the Board from all parts of New Zealand, were 5702, representing a total expenditure of £2,637,000. That means a total.of over £2,000,000 for labour, tlie subsidy on which will run into six figures. It is to- be quite expected that, the total estimated cost of the buildings received tip to to-day, and including all over the country will exceed the £3,000,000 mark.
A RUSH AT CHRISTCHURCH CHRISTCHURCH, September 12. To-day there was a last minute rush of applicants for the building subsidy. Included in them was an application • for. a job worth £25,000 - for Winter Show purposes, and another worth £50,000', the purpose of which has not been disclosed. To-day the applications’ numbered 272, and yesterday 241. The value represented was £169,880, with awages cost of £63,335. The total in Christchurch. to date is 1242 applications, valued at £718,416, with a wages cost of £252,262. The approvals so far number 460, and the. refusals 35.
GISBORNE’S BUILDING BOOM
GISBORNE, September 12
A mild boom set in In Gisborne today in the building subsidy scheme, forty-three armUfmtions .' being received. ' The total value of tlie work is estimated at; £11,274.' The aggregate total in Gjsbojme .since the new scheme started is 216 applications. The work is estimated at £107,000.
