Men are at present engaged on preparatory work, clearing out races' and getting overhead matters in order for active "work which will be commenced next week. ■ The .public of Hokitika enjoyed the novelty' this morning of seeing fotfr planes in the air at the same time. These were the two local .planes, Mr Mercer’s, and a plane piloted by Me Scott, of Auckland. This machine was the one in which M 1 ’ Oscar Garden flew from England to Australia, and is now owned by Mr Scott. With Air Sw&n, also of Auckland ? os pusgengcr, the: plane arrived from that 'city, via Blenheim, this morning. Both gentlemen are directors of the K.D.V. Box Company, and they are making an aerial survey of ''the foreste, contiguous to the'mouth oft,he Big Wanganui river, in which their company holds extensive interests.
In view of the keen interest ■t | h'gt.,ii? being taken in the forthcoming malcb West Coast' v.' Canterbury, church on Saturday , - and' the fact that a large number of business people and other 'residents will be going over on the special train, there is a suggestion current in Hokitika at present, that Saturday should he- observed ®*s a whole holiday, with the late night* on Friday. The proposal i* meeting with general approval among business men who are desirous that a U shops and offices .will observe the holiday, making the decision to close on Saturday a unanimous vote. " ’
The 'presentation' ball in connection with the seven-a-side rugby tournament at 'Wataro.li on Saturday- evening was well attended. The hall was tastefully decorated in' the teams’ colours, and the happy gathering enjoyed the "many novelties. Mr W. Leslie'' and partner won-the lucky spot’, and Mr Mttfdoeh acid partner the statue dance. Tri the absence of the president- the secretary (Mr E. Best), presented the' trophies, and expressed the thanks of the SubUnion to- Mr Newman, - of Hokitika, for a cap for club, cofnpetiitiort; and to Mif M. Sullivan, of Weheka, for a cup for '; the North v. South animal fixture.' Cheers for 'the donors (were heartily rendered. . Tile Newman 'Cup-' was won by Wataroa?, Mr Vincent, the skipper, returning thanks. .The seven-a-side medals were won by the same team. The North v. South game (Sullivan; Cup): has to be replayed, as the last game' was played to a draw’. At most enjoyable evening, was brought to a close with the advent of Sunday morning.
