LARGE MEAT CARRIERS

NEW ZEALAND TRADE.

Work is now actively in hand 0 n the construction of the hulls of two large meat-carrying motor ships for the •Shaw Savill and Albion Company at the Belfast yard of - Harland and AVolff, Limited. They will be employed in the trade between England and New Zealand. Inasmuch as they are among the largest and most important cargo motor-liners under construction in the world, considerable interest 'attaches to the work of building them. The vessel's will be shelter-deckers, 1 with a forecastle and long bridge erec- | tion and a. small house aft, ' above j which is the docking bridge. The pro- | file is completed by two slightly raked pole, masts, squat funnel and vertical ’derrick posts. A seven-ton boom is on ' each derrick post- and those on each of the two masts can, lift from eight to ten tons. On the foremast there is'also .a. special derrick for heavy lifts. Each derrick has its own electric winch. The bridge structure amidships comprises a promenade deck and a bridge deck, with four lifeboats above.

Accomodation- for Id passengers is arranged on the promenade deck, and quarters for the captain and navigating officers are in a house at the forward end of the boat deck, the navigating bridge and charthouse being on. tlio' deck above. The vessels will be propelled bv two sets 0 f Harland-B and W. four-stroke single-acting airless injection Diesels, with continuous supercharge on the Buc-hi system.' It is understood that the ships will have a working speed, when folly loaded, of 16 knots, with a- substantial reserve. The passengers will be accommodated in. .single-berth cabins, each with a private bathroom.
