Georges Carpentier, the former champion boxer, figured in the rescue of the two. Englishwomen after a scene, .following a gala, at a -fashionable nignf club at Cannes, where many aristocrats, including the Grown Prince of Italy and his wife, and the Grand Du wo Dmitri of Russia were present.
A young South American, apparently drunk, followed, the Englishwomen, and 'Carped-ier, accompanied by an English sportsman, .found the South American attempting to embrace them. The Englishman intervened, but received a blow .on the jaw, whereupon Carppntier floored his assailant breaking Iris nose. The novelist, Mr E. Phillips Oppenheim, who was .present, says that four shots were .-fired in the subsequent, fracas.. ~= ...... .....
