AUTHORITIES BUSY (British Oflic'ul Wireless.) RUGBY, August 22. Local authorities throughout Great Britain are at ’ present concentrating on schemes .for the removal of slums and for the provision of alternative accommodation. For the most part, slums are situated in the older boroughs and are, in the words or Sir Edward Hilton Young (Minister of Health), relics of a time when the general law and byjaws did not prevent the establishment of housing conditions intolerable; according! 'to present standards,
In a recent circular the Minister for Health stated that conditions w present were auspicious for a conceited, determined attack on slums, and called upon the local authorities to submit definite schemes for the removal, within five years, of all unsuitable dwellings,
Since the war local authorities have in most cases considered bousing in relation U-o new construction to meet the demands of population, and within- the last 14 years 2,000,000 new houses have beon built, Only a small proportion of these have been definitely allotted to slum dwellers, nud although many progressive boroughs have done 'excellent work in tackling local slum areas, the action of the Minister in dealing with the subject on a national basis has stimulated interest 'generally, and enlisted publio suppbrt for drastic slum clearance schemes.
