HEAVY DAMAGES

AWARDED AGAINST MOTORIST (Per Press Association Copyright .) . CHRISTCHURCH, August 23. Special and , general . damages amounting to ; £1034 ' 14s 6d were awarded , by a jury in the Supreme Court to-day to Mrs Violet Blanche Larsen . .who while riding a bicycle, was injured ,in an accident last October at the corner of Papanui Road and Healey Avenue. There was a collision between a motor car driven by George Mazey and a. motor cycle ridden by Edward Pickup, and the car at almost the same instant struck Mrs Larsen.

The jury held that the accident was caused by negligence on the part of Mazey, and judgement was given against him by Mr . Justice MacGregor. The jury held that Mazey was negligent in failing to keep a proper lookout; in failing to giye way to a motor cycle approaching from his, right; and in failing properly to manage his car so as to avoid a collision ; and the jury held, that this negligence contributed to the accident. It was held that Pickup had not been negligent in any of these respects, and bad not contributed to the accident. The original claim was for £1234 14s 6d. Mazey was ordered to pay all of the costs. INTOXICATED DRIVER FINED WELLINGTON, August 23. Arthur Halamond de Lislie was fined £2O on a charge of driving a car while in a state of , intoxication, the conviction to be entered on bis license for the current term, and for two years afterwards. On his own application, a prohibition order was made against him. Do Lisle’s car recently struck and killed an intoxicated man on the Hutt Road at the Petone woollen m.--jB. •
