RUGBY FOOTBALL
WO TON. BEATS SOUTHLAND. (Per Press Association—Copyright). WELLINGTON, August 23. Tlig, touring Southland Rtigby team were defeated by Wellington at Athletic Park to-day by 38 to 11. The game was evenly, contested in the first spell, when the visitors played, with a strong wind and a bright sun behind them, but' once Wellington had these conditions in their favour, they opened up the play, and with their hacks and fopvards combining • in -fast passing rushes, they ran the Southerners off their feet.
Southland fought doggedly, their forwards particularly, playing a n . honest game, but they were not of an equal class with the victors, whose taetif:al : superiority proved a. big point in their favour. Southland . saw sufficient of the ball to ; have held their own with Wellington, but their movements lacked design and finish. SYDENHAM WIN PAYNE TROPHY CHRISTCHURCH, August 23. Sydenham beat , Otago University to-day by ten poinst to nine, in the annual match for the Payne Trophy, played between the premier club teams of Dunedin and Christchurch. Sydenham, who were, the holders of the trophy, scored two tries, and a field goal; and University scored two trios and a penalty goal. . SOUTHLAND PLAYEB HURT, WELLINGTON, August 23. C. Pawaon fractured one of is right ribs in "the Wellington-Southland Rugby match to-day, DITTMAN SHIELD. After a spell of a couple of weeks there will be a football match on Cass Square on Saturday afternoon when a Pittman Shield challenge game will be played, when Westland Sub-Union representatives will defend their right to hold the shield from the challengers, the Lake Brunner Sub-Union representatives. Westland'team (published on Tuesday) contains a fairly representative selection, though''it is to ho regretted that Ross has not more representatives. The holders should be able to easily stall off the challenge.
■' liite'rest will be shown in the selection. of their' team to'represent the West Coast against CanterbuVy on the following Saturday, September 2nd. In view of the possibility of air alteration be i irig made in the forwards,' it will be interesting to bote the''attitude‘.taken in regard to the new blood,to be introduced to the previous l selection. ' The forward team should -be able to fully •uphold their-position against' the‘Shield holders, but it will be difficult to give the hack team the thrust that will.be necessary if there is to be a hope of victory. In the last two games, there has been> tins failure,! but there has been no effort to remedy the trouble, which Jias been very noticeable to every follower of the game;.-
