NEW YORK, August 22.
At Chestnut Hills, Massachusetts. Turnbull and iQuiist defeated the local players, Turner Bros., 6—l, 6—3, 6—l, in the first round of the national doubles. Turnbull and Quist’s match was eventless, the Australians’ victory being indicated from the very first, atthough one of the Americans had an exceptionally vigorous service, which troubled 'Quist, his 'returns being almost uniformly defensive. Crawford and McGrath won by default from T. Flynn (Bung Island), and J. Ray (Cambridge, Massachusetts), but being badly in need of practice, played informally with various club members to-day.
