The Borough C ou neil last evening resolved that the Minister of Finance be again asked for a full rate su'hsidy, in view of the fact- that the urban farms fund rating Act had nullified tho effect of Local Authorities : Interest Reduction Act.

At 7 a.m. on Sunday the residence of Mr R. Strange on Waimea Road was destroyed ■ by-fire. The occupants escaped in their' night attire. The only things -saved were a child’s cot and a chest of drawers. The brigade had no chance to save the house.

Under the 'will of the late Mr James Henry Maxwell, a former building inspector' fo,r the Auckland city council,, the siim of about £IO,OOO was left, .to be evenly 'divided between the Auckland Pr’esbyterian Orphanages and Social Sendee Association, and the (New Ze.alorid Institute for the Blind. Mr Maxwell’s will was sworn at under £17,000, and about £5,000 will be absorbed ’in -family bequests.
