OAMARU PROTEST MEETING

OAMARU, August 18. A meeting of over 200 unemployed last night protested against the cuts in .allocations.-It was reported that a hundred men this week had been reduced, and it is. understood that, a further 40 would he affected next week. At the isame time . last , year, the number- on the . register was - considerably more, yet drastic cut s had ; beeii made. It was resolved that a deputation wait on the Mayor - (Mr Cooney), ..and Mr MacPherson, M.P., to move for the full allocation from -the Unemployment Board "for the district.

Strong exception• was - taken to the. ■attitude- of the Board relative to not -farming a local unemployment committee in place of the one recently dissolved.

The question of married men being sent t-o the Waitaki hydro woi’kg was also discussed, “an-d it was resolved that the relief workers in North Otago Istrongly protest against being conscripted for hydro works, and- they cal] upon the unemployed to refuse any call for work at the hydro under present conditions.

The opinion wa-s also expressed by the meeting that the No. 10 Scheme should be abolished, as a man who had 'means /was the only kme who fcould benefit.
