1600 TEACHERS UNEMPLOYED

' The statement' that, ; in May, j : tl)erp ; - were 1615 primary school teachers without permanent employment, was made in ’a communication received from the Otago Education Board to the Auckland Board to-day. The total included 475 in Auckland,:-316'in ..Canterbury, 202 in Wellington; ,and’ 190 in Otago.. A. member of .Ahe'Board t commented that the position wpsyscandalous. The chairman (Mr. Wells), said: ‘‘lt means that the Dominion has spent nearly £500,000' before \it needed w have done, for the training of teachers.”
Another member said: “We won’t need any training college for pome years.” : The Education Department advised that it had been decided. to close the Christchurch college during 1934, arid to transfer to the Auckland college any students requiring further training.
