The centenary of the foundation of tile state of Victoria, and. the city of Melbourne will be celebrated in the summer of 1934-35, and it is being arranged to bold an elaborate programme in honour of the events. The celebrations would begin in October of next year, and would cover six or seven months. It was expected that a representative of the King—one of His Majesty’s sons, it was hoped—would arrive about the middle of October, and would take a leading part in the dedication of Melbourne’s great war memorial, the Shrine of Remembrance, on Armistice Day. In October and November there would be the Royal Agricultural Show and the opening of an Australian Exhibition. Visitors would lie able to see the Caulfield Crp>, the Derby and the Melbourne Cup run. An international air race from London to Melbourne, for a £15.000 prize, would take place l in November. There would be motor-racing, sports and cricket for boys from the public schools of the Empire, swimming, vaclit races and rowing <on the Yarra, grand opera and orchestral concerts. The Australian lawn tennis championship' in January, it was hoped, would attract

such international champions as Vines and Allison, who had promised to come, 8a toll, Nunoi, Pony and Austin. Twelve of the world’s most notable men, including Kipling and Einstein, were to be invited to visit Melbourne as guests of the Government, and would probably deliver addresses. Many conferences, including those of the British Medical Association, Australian branch, and the Institute of Pacific Relations, would be held at mid-summer. The, programme should prove an attractive one and draw a large number of visitors to the Victorian capital.
