RAILWAY OFFICERS

ANNUAL CONFERENCE OPENS.

(Per Press Association—Copyright)

WELLINGTON. July 26,

The annual conference of the Railway Officers’ Institute was opened yesterday by the general manager of railways (Mr Maekley) who said that none knew better than he how serious the salary reductions and curtailment of conditions had been to all.

He regretted the necessity for the policy which had been followed, as did the Railway Board. He assured the conference that the management, appreciated the co-operation and assistance given by the staff to give service. He felt that, the railways were giving better service to-day than ever before. The financial position was improved and the public bad realised that a continued improvement assisted the country’s stability.

The loyalty and co-operation of the staff in the strenuous period through which they were passing was also tlm subject of comment by the president (Mr V. R. J. Stanley), in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet.

Remits from various branches were considered in committee.
