MADRID, July 25
Five hundred ariests, including a number o. women have been . made throughout Spam. These have followed the discovery of a widespread antiGovernmeut plot. There has been intense police activity, and it lias foiled the design, winch was to cause a rising by Fascists, Monarchists, syndicalists and anarchists. Police throughout Monday raided residences of suspects, including those of lawyers, journalists, students, priests and politicians.
Two priests have been arrested in Granada while they were saying Mass. When the police arrived they were allowed to continue the celebration ol Mass, after which they surrended to the police. Unrest has been prevalent in the | South of Spain, particularly in the , city of Seville, for Some clays. ComI munists’ meetings have been banned, j Syndicalists and the labour organi- ' sations have been closed in several of the other cities. There was a premature bomb explosion near Cadiz on Sunday night, It is believed it aroused suspicions among the authorities. ! Sixty-three out of 117 persons who have been arrested in Madrid, were immediately taken to the penal settlement of Ocana. It is believed that anarchists prepared the violent movement, as a protest against a severe law dealing with public order, which the Parliament are now debating. , Monarchists, doubtless, took advantage of an opportunity to attempt to overthrow the Republic. The trial has began in Barcelona of forty-two , Communists. They are charged with participation in a Tarassa revolutionary movement eighteen months ago. The prosecution is demanding life sentences on them.
