COMMENT IN ENGLISH PRESS.

LONDON, July 17
The “Morning Post,” commen-ing on the North Australia development plain says: "It is almost certain that
the) British investor would have to find the bulk of the 'capital and the British Government’s duty will be to ensure that there shahl be a response that i© commensurate with so important an imperial project. It must also be cle.>T that the man power to oarry out such work should be drawn mainly from Britain.”
The paper adds; ‘‘No more auspicious moment could be chosen. The markets, indeed, ar© temporarily dislocated, through the world depression, but that j 6 no ground for ■discouragement. On the contrary, Empire investmant and migration are matters for long-term planning. Now, when the first signs of a recovery are beginning jto appear, it is just the time to look ahead, and to make dispositions enabling the Empire to enjoy the fullest share of prosperity that is coming.”
Mr Bruce ha© been deluged with inquiries for details of Australia’s reported plan to develop the Northern Territory and Carpentaria through the medium of chartered companies.
The bulk of the press seems to have jumped to the conclusion that the companies are already being formed, probably confusing Mr Lyons’ speech with the earlier .South Australia project. The scheme is tepidly received in the city, especally the extravagant Canberra reports mentioning that two hundred millions capital was involved. COMPANIES SEEK CONCESSION. SYDNEY, July 17. The Federal Minister of the Interior, Mr Perkins, said to-day that, since the publication of the Government’s policy .regarding the development _of the Northern Territory, hi s correspondence had considerably increased. He, however, hastened to explain that no company had so far approached the Government concerning a charter, but he had been given to understand that certain big interests here were taking up the scheme if they could obtain concessions. He .added that the scheme already outlined wa s merely ,a basis /Cor negotiations, the only unalterable j clause being the maintenance of a White Australia'.
