FALSE PETROL RETURN

AUCKLAND’, June 28

A plea of guilty was entered.:, byr Ronald Alfred Kirkup,-an air pilot',, in the Onehunga Police Court yesterday, on a charge .of having made a false declaration under the Motor Spirits Taxation Act, by altering the date on. ■a City Coiporation docket from Decamber, 1932, to January, 1933, .claiming a refund on 22 gallons of petrol. Defendant told the magistrate, Mr W. R. McKean, that although the! petrol had been consumed in December,: he had neglected to .claim for;,the re-ri fund until the quarterly term had expired and the only way he could get the refund was to claim for it-in the next quarter’s return. Sergeant Brown said defendant could: have applied for the rebate in January and still have been in time, withouthaving had recourse to the alteration of the document.

The magistrate.' said defendant’s lapse, although of a serious nature, was .duo more to stupidity than' to any .criminal intent, and lie was fortunate In not being charged under the Police Offences Act. He was fined £2 10s and costs.' '; - ' M '
