MASTER BAKERS’ PROPOSAL.

AUCKLAND, June 26

A proposal bo provide relief workers with bread at 4yd a loaf during the winter month 6 is being discussed by the. executive of the Auckland Master Bakers’ Association. The scheme, which is dependent on.tne granting of a subsidy by other interests, involves the distribution of 720,000 loaves to genuine relief workers during the next three or four months. .

The . price to die . charged to relief workers under the scheme, which has been out! tried by Mr S. S. Green, secretary of the association, represents a .reduction, of 25 per cent, on the present, standard price of‘6d a l°af. The total cost of the .720,000 loaves at the standard price would be £IB,OOO and the,tot.. 1 r cduction to relief workers would 'be £4500. In order to provide a subsidy to cover . this amount the association has -agreed to find £SOOO, providing the remaining £ISOO is subscribed ■by iro'-ief organisations o r other trade interests. .The executive af the association has empowered the secretary to -interview -other • interested bodies with a- view to obtaining the additional money. ;

If the full subsidy : is .available, . it i s proposed that, bread coupons, • each valued at 6d, should be sold to relief workers at. h’d. They would be ac ceptecl at their face value by any member of the Master Bakers’ Association, who could then redeem them -at their face value at the office of the association. The relief worker would have a wide choice anil would be able to purchase at a reduced price the bread which he personally considered the best. As far .as possible it is intended that the coupons shall be issued to relief workers by existing -relief organi nations,- with appropriate precautions tobe taken against overlapping:
