LONDON, June 28. At the Wimbledon tennis tourney, results to-day were follows; MEN’S DOUBLES—FIRST ROUND.
Quist and Turnbull (Australia) defeated Vines and Gledhill (lI.S-A.) 4—6, 5-7, 6-2, 6—4, 6—2. The Australians provided to-day’s thrill at Wimbledon, when Turnbull and Quist, in their debut on the nerve testing centre court, decisively crushed the American doubles champions, whom the committee ranked the second best pair in the; tourney. They frequently made the giant Vines look mediocre. The match was rot-able fo r the- A-astnaiiaW display of grit when two sets in aireai’s, sending the spectators into tnins* ports of delight. Turnbull was the star of the match, hitting spoctacul-r winner S) pouncing on short lobs, killing them instantaneously, and rattling the; Americans. Quist improved towards the end and ably supported h s partner. Gledhill made few evror s but Vines was erratic. Stofen and Sutter defeated Bernard and iMenlin 6—3, 2—6, 9—7, 6 4. Farquharson and Kirby defeated Cooper and Wheatley 6—3, 6—3, 4—6, 6—3. ,’D'aborrnaii and Lacroix defeated Finnigau and Giesen 6—4, 6—4, 6—-2. MEN’S SINGLES —THIRD ROUND. Crawford played; beautiful aggressive tennis against 1 Gentien, exploiting every stroke, scoring winners all round the court. •' . McGrath found Lee too vigorous, and resourceful .and persistent in retrieving. McGrath wa 6 never able to settle down and could do nothing against the serving and driving onslaught. He was beaten within the hour. Steelman had two hours’ struggle against Condon. He was so distressed at the end of the third set, that he sent the ball boy for a succession of cups of tea “with plenty of sugar.’ He derived sufficient stimulation to survive, although behind o—3 in the : fifth set, . ginning six games in a row for the match.
