PIVE CHINESE CONVICTED

WELLINGTON, June 30
Pines totalling £lls were imposed on five Chinese as the result o.f yesterday s raid of premises in Saining Street. The police detailed how they made a forcible entry into the barricaded place, and, after searching they had unearthed from beneath the floo r eight smoking pipes and a quantity of opium and other gear, including nine wooden pillows, iai seagras s mat, a set Of scales and a box of papers used in wrapping up opium. It wa 6 stated that the premises had been used consistently si n ce raided on March 23, when the keeper was fined £SO. It had changed hands more than once, sand the present occupie r had been in it for a fortnight. For permitting his premises to be used for smoking opium Doun Hong was fined £SO, in default three months’, and for obstructing the police £lO, in default three monhs’. Two other s were fined £ls each for being on the and two more £l2 lOg each.
