EGG INDUSTRY

EXPORTING SEASON’S SURPLUS

CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON

(Per Press Association — Copyright )

WELLINGTON, June 30

A conference of egg marketing agents and poultry producers, convened by the Department of Agriculture, was held yesterday, Dr. Reakes. presiding. Dr Reakes said that the conference had been called to discuss ways and means of organising the export of surplus eggs during the coming season in order to prevent the collapse of the local market as a result ol the seasonal glut. For varying reasons, principally on account of low expenses and providing that there was a reasonably profitable market, poultry farming must continue to bo a valuable adjunct, and an important factor in the success of small holdings, the tonly way to maintain a profitable market in the flush season was to organise the export of the unconsumable surplus. After reports of what was being done in various parts had been made by the delegates,. Dr. Reakes said that a central committee, located at Wellington, with authority to act on behalf of the four provincial committees was essential in order that the reservation of shipping space and other activities could be carried out expeditiously, and he suggested that the committee should consist of one representative of the marketing agents, one of producers, and one of the Department. This was unanimously adopted. Messr F. Picot and J. N. McLean were appointed to represent marketing agents and Jproducers (respectively, and, it was subsequently announced that Mr A. Ironside would represent the Department. ' It was resolved that the expenses of the central committee should be borne on a pro rata basis by the four provincial committees.
