STRATFORD’S MAYOR

COUNCIL MEETING

RESIGNATION OF ONE MEMBER

STRATFORD, June 29

Mv McMillan was installed as Mu un-to-night at the first meeting of the Council since the Mayoral election. The deputy Mayor (Dr Gordon) extended congratulations, saying that Mr McMillan’s huge majority was satisfactory to both the Mayor and the Council, shewing a definite mandate. Although the speaker did not agree with the Mayor in everything, lie wished to .give him credit for his courage of his convictions.

Ocher councillors spoke in a similar strain.

Mr McMillan returned thanks. Cr C r R. Finnei'ty tendered his resignation as chairman of the works committee. Cr Speck suggested that Cr. Finnerty should resign from the Council altogether because of an alleged statement made to the press showing •lack of confidence in the Council.

The Mayor asked: Do you want to say anything? Cr. Finnerty: Ido not want to start an argument, I don’t agree with your policy, and think that some one agreeing with you should take charge of the work.

Cr R. Harknoss, chairman of the electrical committee, said that he .also disagreed with the Mayor’s policy, but he intended to co-operate, and carry *n.

Cr, Finnerty asked the Mayor to accept a motion that the whole of the Council (resign, saying that a new election would give Cr. Speck the chance o,f finding where he stood. The Mayor; I cannot accept such a motion.

Cr. Finnerty’s resignation was accepted and Cr. Nelson was appointed chairman of the works committee.
