RABBIT SKINS
DUNEDIN THE: CHIEF CENTRE. Dunedin is the centre of tlie rabbitskin trade in New Zealand. Attempts have been made in the past to conduct rabbitskiu sales in other centres, but they have fallen through, and now skins from Auckland to the Bluff are consigned to Dunedin skinbroking firms. This may be accounted for by the climate further north not being suitable for producing good fur. The low prices ruling for rabbitskins ■ during recent years were not very encouraging to the rabbiters, but lately there lias been a great improvement. The rabbitskiu sale which was held in Dunedin last week was the largest for many years, and buyers-from both the United States and the Continent were represented. In one store alone approximately 72,0C01b. of skins were on the floor, which at an average of six skins to the pound works out at approximately 402,000 skins, representing the work of between 500 and GOO rabbiters in all parts of New Zealand. With an average .price of 3s petlb. over all grades, a total value of over .010,000 is represented. As tin's was in or.c store only that figure will have to be multiplied by the number of firms operating to arrive at an eeti- ■ mate. 1
