To-day wa* Charity Day at Lancaster Park, when all the takings are given less minimum deductions, for the relief of distress in the city. The total takings were £312, and it is estimated than £3()j will he available after expenses. It is the usual practice of the Canterbury Rugby Union to issue 500 free tickets to relief workers, who wish to attend the games at Lancaster Park on Saturdays. This morning, however, a charge of threepence was placed on the tickets. The .response wag magnificent. No man demurred and many gave more than they were asked. Alii. rough pennies were most in evidence, shilling's, iiorins and halfcrowns were offered, and no man ac-. cepted change. One gave ten shillings. Nearly 1000 men applied for tickets.
Three suburban depots are to open next week, at Papanui and Addington on Friday, and Sydenham on Tuesday. The Heathcote County Council decided at its meeting last evening to make a grant of £25. The relief fund now totals £6,793 9s Gd. A clothes drive, organised by the letter carriers of the city, 'was held yesterday afternoon, and resulted in the collection of more than ten thousand parcels. The generosity of the householders exceeded the most sanguine' expectations, and so much remained uncollected in the suburbs that a supplementary drive will have to be organised immediately to make the sweep complete. Not only clothing was given, the collection including between 7000 and 9000 1 pairs of boots and shoes, bedsteads and bedding, sewing machines, kitchen utensils, preserves, groceries, and produce. The Postmen were assisted by Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, and the Businessmen’s Relief Organisa-. tion.
