At the 'annual meeting of the Hokitika Fire Brigade earlier in the week, Superintendent Mclntosh referred at some length to the necessity of improving the methods for giving a fire alarm. He said, that he had been endeavouring to have an alarm system installed in the home of each fireman, so that on a button being touched b°Us in their homes would give an alarm, which would prove more efficient titan the ringing of the bell at the station. By this means each fireman would receive an instantaneous call instead of the procedure at present, where, when the nightwatchman was not in duty, an adjacent telephone subscriber had to be rung up. n-iMi •> ropiest to five the alarm »+ the fir, s station. The cost involved ie the proposed improvement was a 'substantial or", and he was afraid that at present it was beyond the resources available.

There are 445 surveyors registered in the Dominion, according-to the ‘New Zealand Surveyor,” the journal of the New Zealand Institute of Surveyors. The list, however, includes the names of a number of men not resident in the Dominion at present, and also some who, though having retired from the profession, still wish to remain associated with it. “Present conditions,” the journal s ays, “and the action of the Government in relation to this and other professions seem to bring the possibility of an annual practising fee into the foreground of practical politics for ourselves.”
One of the worst ."'blunders in the history of New Zealand legislation,” was Mr R. H. Quilli.am’s description of the Mortgagors’ Relief Act when speaking to New Plymouth Rotarians and a number of farmers From the Urenui. He claimed- that the application of the Act was having an indirect but distinctly. derogatory effect upon the fulfilment of contracts. “The idea that the mortgagee is a Shy-lock should be removed from every mind,” he said. “Many of them are actually in poorer circumstances then the mortgagors, and others of them are widows of settlers relying for their income on the proceeds of some mortgage.”

When the Fire Brigade members were discussing at their annual meeting on Tuesday night the notice of motion for the reduction of members from thirty to twenty-two, one supporter thereof went as far as to state that the proposal if carried, would ensure one hundred per . cent more efficiency in the brigade. Strangely enough this rash statement was not referred- to by the other speakers, though the Superintendent stated in the course of a second speech that vith thirty members, the brigade in the pret had reached such a state of efficiency that had formed the subject of congratulations by official inspectors, and others, that proved on this scare there was no need for the suggested reform.

.- rj . . . A year ago the Fire Brigade at its annual meeting passed a motion that the. Eire Board be asked to consider the question of. a renewal of the present No .1 station, and in doing go, to make arrangements in the hew building for sleeping quarters for four or five men, so that, members of the Brigade could sleep on the premises, and be ready to man the motor engine at any time. Mr McGregor inquired at the meeting on Tuesday evening if a reply had been received, and the question was answered in the negative, Mr Mclntosh stating he had informally brought the subject before' the Fire Board, but had recognised that the present time was inopportune for a substantial building scheme to be pushed forward. The loan raised in connection with the purchase of the motor engine would be paid off this year and then the matter could be brought more noticeably under the attention of the authorities. On Mr McGregor's motion, the secreary was instructed to forward a formal letter on the subject to the Eire Board,
