VALUES OF SKINS,AND HIDES-. (Per Press Association —Copyright). WELLINGTON, - June 17.' The substantial increase in the prices of meat, wool, hides and skins at recent sales means a big lift to New Zealand. A few months ago hidcis and skins were hardly worth caving and curing, but now, according to the Wellington sale on Friday, ox hides, GO to 901b5., made 6d to 7£d per lb., an average of 35s each. Cow hides, 40 to 48 lb., made 5d to 7d, an average of, say, 23s each. ISheepskin, 3 (eross-bred itnieclium to coarse) sold at 3|d to o|d lb., equalling about 3« 6d to os a skin. This good news should hearten the people, particularly the farmers, some of whom sold their big bullocks a month ago for £6 10s to £B, while their hides alone are now worth 3ce to 40s.
BRISBANE WOOL SALES. BRISBANE, June 19. The wool sales opened here to-day with strong general competition. Prices were fully five per cent, higher than Sydney closing' rates. J ___ N.S.W. APPOINTMENT. SYDNEY, June 19. The New South Wales Government announces the appointment of Mr J. Merr-stt as Meat Industry Commissioner. His salary will he decided later. Air Merrett was formerly secretary and accountant for the metropolitan abattoirs. The applicants included many from New Zealand and other parts.

ARAHUBA STOCK SALE
A ;uuch smaller entry than usual was the fea.turo of yesterday’s fixture 30 head of cattle only being penned. Owing to transport failure the sheep were not yarded. There was a email attendance of buyers whose requirements were not extensive. Prices were for best ox beef 20s to 21s per hundred. Heifer beef 17. s to # 18s 6d per hundred.
