BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS. WELLINGTON, June *7. The Samoan 'correspondent of the Press Association, writing from Apia on June 8 ) says:— The King’s birthday was celebrated by a public holiday, distinguished visit, ors being the Governor of American Samoa, Captan Landenberger, and M‘-’s Landenborgcr. Royal salutes were fired by the shore battery and from the U.S.-S. Ontario, which wj 6 in the harbour, Kara was served at a function in the Court House. Speeches were, made by the Administrator, General 11. E. Hart, the Hon. I. Carvuthers, the ilTigh Chief Tuatagoloa, Captain Landenberger, and a Samoan chief from Pago Page.

Wreaths were laid on the graves of British and American sailors killed during the Samoan troubles in 1899, a visit being paid to Alulinuu for this purpose

The death occurred on June 3 of Air Leslie Partidge, bacteriologist and chemist, at. Apia. Hospital. Mr Partridge was only 36 years of age, and the news of his death was received with genuine sorrow by the whole community. The funeral was largely attended. A firing party fired three volleys at the graveside, and “Last Post” was sounded. There have been no developments of importance since Mr 0. F. Nelson returned to Samoa, and no trouble is expected. Several chiefs have been arrested for exceeding the time allowed them to visit Apia, and for refusing to return to their villages.
