BRITISH ENGINEERS

REFUSED RELEASE EY SOVIET (United Press Association—By Electric f l elegraph—Copyright).

LONDON, June 16.

The- “Daily Telegraph” says that M. Litvinolf, Russian delegate to the World Economic Conference, met Sir Felix Pole, chairman of Metropolitan Vickers, and refused even to consider the release of Messrs Thornton and MacDonald, the Vickers engineers who are now undergoing terms of imprisonment in Russia, where they were found guilty of sabotage and espionage, until Britain lifted the embargo on Russian goods. M. Litvinoff added that appeals in Russia were rarely heard before a year after conviction or six months at the earliest, and be saw no reason to expedite the procedure in the case of Thornton and MacDonald, unless Britain facilitated it.

ATTITUDE OF BRITAIN LONDON, June 17. It is stated that the interview by Felix Pole with M. Litvinoff requesting the release of Thornton and MacDonald, is entirely unofficial. The Government is taking no steps to approach M. Litvinoff, who has not communicated with the Foreign Office. .«'mmmmmmmmmm wmxmmuunm
