The well maintained success- of the gold dredge adjacent to Okarito will stimulate interest in beach workings, The success, however, was not impeded, The prospecting was attractive in itseif, and the boring being done tborougnly over a considerable area, the reward now being won is in keeping with the ea>rly prospects. The locality was one which figured in the gold yields in the eariy days when so muc-h treasure was won. in the Oki&nto area, and those familiar with the country are net surprised at the good results being credited week by week. The deposits in the neighbourhood of Okarito, are not dissimilar to those of Gillespies, where another dredging venture is under way. That locality likewise was an attractive producer in the early -days, and the country icj not unlike the nature of the Okarito district. The dredge now being built will be worked by electric power, and from all accounts will be well equipped for its task. There are high hopes that the returns will be on a par with those of the Okarito dredge, and if so,-.the enterprise, will be well rewarded. Another dredging venture in the south is located at the Saltwater, near the mouth of the Little Wanganui river. This is an in©resting locality, . very closely connected with the early history of Coast mining, when all traffic passed by the sea beach route. The Saltwater was a special oasis on the route, renowned for its fish and game life, and was a halting place on the long and difficult trek. Mining thereabouts brought its rewards, and dredging lias been spoken of for come time. Indeed, a considerable portion of the Okarito dredge was removed from the Saltwater where an earlier attempt wars made to win gold. Now, a more modern plant is proposed, and like the other propositions, should be launched with equally good prospects of success. A fresh enterprise in gold mining is now ah accomplished fact at Callaghans, where water its being lifted by electric power more than three hundred feet, and made -available for sluicing high auriferous ground, known to exist for some j time, but well out of- the reach of available water by ordinary gravitation. With the introduction of electric power to the locality th. 3 . present scheme Ims been devised end has proved a success, the power delivering water with an effective bo-v] fd r sluicing purpose*. This example is being watched with the idea, of ""/-plying system to other rrororitionß in Westland, where power is at hand, and there is the orospect for material mining develop-r-e-t. There is evident' cf fresh enterprise, a 100, in the Stafford district, whcr.-i mining activities arc nre°o”t in the Hatters —Red Jacks area. A dnieing venture is to b" st"rt r d near Stafford. The CM Wheel of t- — | area at Pi' or’s Fiat is also in raid as a locati ’’ for a fresh effort- with modern appliances, ami the dredging of t]m Y,'ni"xi Creek in that neighbourhood, i„ being investigated again
with tile idea of placing the Awatuna (lreclg.pi on the ground. Those are all ventures of considerable magnitude aul enow that theme ns «. practical interest in the future of gold-mining in Westland. As an .aid to returning prosperity mining is likely to be a special ranter in tue fortunes of Westland again.
