COMMENT MADE BY JUDGE. AUCKLAND, May 23. “Is this mot rather a seriou s experience in 'Auckland?’’ :asked Mr Justice Smith, in the Supremo Ourt yesterday, ■ to counsel for an elderly prisoner who appeared for sentence on a number of charges involving indecent assault on children. ‘‘The 'number of men who have .appeared for sentence recently seems to me to be increasing.” said His Honour. “I do not know the statistics, but a number of men of advanced years have been" brought bpfore this Court lately, whether convicted or not
Addressing the prisoner subseouently His Honour said ; “l cannot resist the impression that men of mature years in Auckland iai’e coming before the Court more frequently than I have known heretofore, whether guilty or not. I think I have a public duty in the mater to impose a deterrent sentence.”
A sentence of reformative detention not exceeding three years was imposed.
