NEW SEAPLANE
MACHINE FOR. HOBSONVILLE. AUCKLAND, May 23. A new Fairey 111. F. seaplane for the Hobsonville air base arrived at Auckland by the steamer Northumberland ii-'om England. The) machine, which was orcleied last year, is of the same' design as the Fairey seaplane at the base. It is described as a Fleet Air Arm type and will be fitted for naMi..; -'Jo Operation work. It is expected that in about a fortnight’s time tli.r. machine will be ready for flying. The Fairey 111. F. type of aeroplane ling an undercarriage which can quickly be changed for floats. The type has been etxensively used in the Fleet Air Ann, though it is now obsolescent and is being gradually replaced. It is fitted with a Napier l-'ion 450 horse-power engine. One of the two Fairey 111. F.’s, originally in use at the Hobsonville air base, was wrecked when doing high-speed tests low down, over Auckland harbour. The machine is a general purpose type, and when co-operating with the Navy is used for spotting and for such work as towing targets for anti-aircraft practice.
