REFUSAL OF £SOO

from art union proceeds

SUNSHINE ASSOCIATION STATES lIS REASONS.

AUCKLAND, April 21

Fr Rowing a report it was intended to provide a maximum sum o! £s'o'O' from the proceeds of the. Great Easter Art Union to the Auckland Community Sunshine Association, the executive of the organisation has decided against accepting any funds raised by means of 'art unions. An official of the association stated that the decision had been made purely as a matter of principle. There was no hostility to the purpose of the Government, which was undoubtedly intended in the best spirit. The association was asked by the Government whether it would care to participate in any -proceeds from the ait union. A telegram was then forwarded to the Government asking if the matter could he deferred until the meeting of the executive. Before the date of the executive meeting the Minister made an announcement through the newspapers that the sum of £€oo would lie made available. Sit.ce then 110 official notification had been received.

“WORTHY OF DIRECT GIVING.”

“The executive naturally considered the position veiy seriously,” the official continued. “We have no money to carry on our health camps av Mntuihi island, hut we felt that the children of Auckland and New Zealand for that matter were worthy o* direct giving. Wo felt that the did rive 11 were being penalised by the holding of art unions. o’’r opinion is that the people supporting i?rt unions are the poorer people in a hope of securing a substantial prize. They purchase these 2s 6-1 tickets and their children are sufferers. As a consequence tlvr executive decided not to accept the money from the art union on the principle thta the whole position vis like •"’dug an ambulance 'at the foot of a fiff. instead of a fence at the top. We do not want to give approval of art unions. The work we do is worthy of direct support.”
