(I’e Cress Association — Copyright.)

AUCKLAND, April 23. The value to New Zealand of its

trade treaty with Canada, which has now been in operation for one year, is shown by a, return furnished by the Comptroller of Customs, indicating that Canada imported £218,000 worth of Now Zealand goods in the.half year ended March 31 last, as compared with £Bw,U;K> worth of goods in the half year ended March 31, 1032, an increase of £138,000. The official return of the Comptroller, which has shown the main items of goods exported from New Zealand to Canada in the two periods, is as follows: Exports to Canada for six months in 1032 and six months in 1933 respctively :

In view, of the criticism by Mr W. Goodlellow, managing director of Amalgamated Dairies Ltd., regarding the ‘•unsatisfactory” nature, of this trade treaty, and his statement that •‘Canada seems to be seeking the position of being a seller without doing any buying inquiries have been made in Canada on behalf of the Canadian —British Traders’ Association of New Zealand.

The following cabled assurance has been received by Mr A. 11. Thomson, chairman of the Association from tiic Canadian Manufacturers! Association, Toronto: Canadian tanners have agreed to purchase at least twice the average quantities of hides and skins from New Zealand. Purchases this year will exceed 140,000 calf skins and not less than 45,000 cattle hides. This illustrates Canada’s successful oiforts .to increase her purchases from New Zealand. Statistics show that New Zealand is our chief supplier from Empire sources of wool, hides, casings ancl other commodities. Imports from New Zealand will continue to increase steadily.
