OBITUARY

The death took place yesterday afternoon at his residence at Aicken’s on the Christchurch road, of an old and esteemed pioneer of the West (oast, Mr William Russell Aicken passing away. For a great many years, more especially in the old coaching days, the Aickeii’s accommodation house has been a landmark, and the late Mr Aicken was himself an equally well-known identity. It is over half a century- since lie settled at Aicken’s where he acted as roadman until 23 years ago, when he retired. A native of Bangor, County Down, Ireland, where he was born over 88 years ago, the late Mr Aicken came to New, Zealand in the ship “Queen of Beauty,” landing at Coromnadel in 1863. Working at mining there, lie came next to the Coast. Deceased, besides his widow, leaves one son, Mr James Aicken, 0 f Aickens,' and three daughters (Mesdames T. Wilson, Albert Street, Grey mouth; J. Evans, Aicken’s; and W. Ellis, Melbourne). One son lost his life in the war. Deceased also leaves twenty grandchildren and one greatgrandchild.
