HEAVY CHINESE CASUALTIES.

Following the fall of Clungwantjo yesterday, the Japanese arc pressing southwards, intending to capture the area between the Luan river and tho Great Wall.
Severe fighting is proceeding at Peitaiho and at Chanli and the Japanese aeroplanes arc bombing the retreating 'Chinese. Farces at ’Nantassan, east of Peitaiho, suffered a heavy artillery bombardment, and subsequent aircraft bombing, practically tho whole of the town being levelled.
Fierce fighting is also raging at Luianyang. Following the occupation of Chingwantao the Japanese repaired the damaged railway, enabling armoured trains to enter.
A provisional military Government was established in the city, residents remaining remarkably calm under the sudden change. Tho latest developments brings the Japanese army definitely within China proper, although it was originally stated • that they did not intend to proceed beyond tho Great Wall, The Chines© casualties during tho past fow days have been oxtrotnely heavy.
