For the year ended on' Friday last, the revenue from .all outward railway traffic in the Canterbury-We s tland district—that is, from Lyttelton to Tjh•wai’d, including the ■■■■ Mount Somers branch, and all West C°aist. stations — disclose a decrease of '£57,237, compared with that of the previous year. ;• *
The 1 items showing* an' ihofease were the amount of timber and -the number of bearer tickets, and tho total number of passengers carried/ S Q ’.ne 87,367 tons oi timber Were carried, as against 80,854 tons --last- year,., the increase .being largely due to big shipments of white pine to Australia. The, total oi bearer tickets sold—twelve.tr] p tickets available up to 25 miles, which. cost 10 per cent, lens than the ordinary fare rose : froth' .4520..tq, S.|S2, .On fhO other band, the number-of B ea&on tickets sold fell from 61,333. to 51,808. A possible explanation is; that, -travellers are flavouring the bear®r ' tickets-The-cause they do not’ 'involve so much expenditure at tho one time.
