The were impressive scene s in Calcutta 'to-day on the- occasion of the Mohammedan festival of Bakrid, and countless thousands in their gayest garb, congregated in mosques to offer prayer. The remainder of the day was spent in holiday making. The poor were not forgotten, and the supplic-a tions of thousands of beggars, who lived on the pavements were rewarded. Elaborate precautions were taken by the police t 0 prevent a disturbance as this wag the favourite day. The festivities were -repeated on a smaller 6 cale in every town and village in India.
