CAUSED BY CARELESSNESS
Lack of individual care is primarily responsible for the growing number of fatalities and injuries on the streets! and highways of America, according to J. Mack Young, vice-president of. the Automobile Club of New York,; which is affiliated with the American Automobile Association.
Mr Young basis bis statement oir a report from tlie A.A.A. safety de J partment dealing with an analysis of' accidents jn States with drivers’ licence laws. The highlights are: More than 90 per cent of the motorists involved in 1,281,400 fatal and non-fatal accidents had been driving for more than a year.
Around 85 per cent of the accidents occurred in clear weather and on streets or highways with a dry surface. Between 5 and 6 p.m. is the peak hour for non-fatal accidents, while the greatest number of fatalities occur between 6 and 7 p.m. Sunday is the day when most accidents occur and when the largest number of persons are killed and nonfatally injured. Intersections' are the danger points, and 40 per cent of 860,00 Q accidents in 1931 were at street crossings. The most hazardous age for automobile driving is under the age of 20, and their accident record is 39 per cent worse than for drivers between 20 and 30. i
Sixty per cent of motor accidents occur iu daylight hours.
